Today's topic is : MOOD

mood1

Pronunciation:/muːd/
noun
  • a temporary state of mind or feeling:he appeared to be in a very good mood about something
  • the atmosphere or pervading tone of something:a concept album which captures the mood of modern times
  • [as modifier] (especially of music) inducing or suggestive of a particular feeling or state of mind:mood music

E.g. If the play set as an intense mood
    • Actors may most probably be physically uptight.
    • Their eyecontacts consists of tension
    • Even negative spaces has tension and pressure put on to the actors and the audiences
    • Distance between actors and distance between actor and audience. If the actors suddenly become very close, almost staring at each other nose touching nose, you can feel the intensity between them. If the actors come towards the audience almost breaking the liminal space, audience can feel the suspension being built up.

Mood that can be created in theatre:

  • Lighting
      • blue lighting -> Cold and lonely
      • Warm lighting -> Happy
      • What is in the shadow and what is in the light?
  • Music and Sound effect
      • Happy music
      • Solemn music
      • Scary music - if a ghost character appear but the music that is playing is a comical happy music the character will not look scary anymore and the audience won't anticipate something terrifying to happen.
Once the lighting, the sound and the props are presented, the atmosphere is created and the mood will be set.

Workshop: Creating mood

Objective of the workshop is to deliver how mood can be affected by elements and styles of performance.

  • Fillipino game
    • Scattered around, people named A will be the Humpy, B will be the Filipinos.
    • When Prue says Humpy, all humpies have to run and find a new filipino they can join another Humpy but cannot become a Filipino. All Filipino has to stay where they are.
    • When Prue says Filipino, all Filipino have to find a new humpy made up of two Humpies.
a, b and c character, event planer and caller.

Today's lesson is on TIME, PLACE and SPACE. Prue read us a story book! It was lovely and I love the way it was being told =D

Right after that, Prue tell us to get into three groups and do Tabloids.
So what's Tabloid? It means at any one time of the scene being performed, one person in the group moves while the rest in freeze position. It looks like a photograph that can move!

First part of this Exercise is to depict a scene from the story or any other story that we can come out with but must be related to reminiscing.  Second part of this Exercise, we have to come out with 3 more scenes of the story in any sequence we want but must be in a nice flow.

Practical works
The "invisible ball"
In a circle we are suppose to throw a ball to another person, BUT an invisible one. It was so interesting to see a different kind of "ball" being passed around and across as this ball is changeable. it is different on a different person hands. It could be really big and round, it could be small but heavy, light and flying away!

Skills practiced:
  • As no talking is allow, we have to be really attentive in who is holding onto the ball and who is the person holding the ball passing it to?
  • Focus on the "ball" you are holding to! if it is big and heavy it should land on your hand that way before you transform it into some other size and weight and make sure you show it well! So that the next person knows exactly how the ball looks like.

Counting 1 to 20

This is one tricky game! It sound really simple as the instruction goes: in a circle, looking down, everyone is suppose to say a number from 1 to 20, one after another. No sequence is supposed to be instructed and person beside you cannot say after you had said. It was not until the game start did you realise how hard it was! As you have no idea who will say next! If two person say the same number out together, whole game starts from number 1 again.
So anyway, we actually did it the FIRST ROUND! =D amazing! Even Prue said that this was the first time she go through the first round without stopping!

Skill practiced:
  • Focus on the "energy" in the atmosphere is how i can describe what is going on in my head. As looking down, without any eye contact, we have no idea who will take the next step in saying out the next number. There were long pauses and short pauses, the rhythm of us shouting out the number is totally random.
  • Focus on the sound being made by people around you. When someone is about to say something there is this very very soft sound made by the lips. At least when I heard similar sound I will just wait for my next turn.
  • Tension within myself. I was quite tensed up when i haven't gotten my chance to say out the number as there is high possibility that others will just wait for someone to shout out the next number. As I shout out the number, it was even more scary as I am afraid someone else will shout at the same time as me.
Noisy Party vs Quiet Party

One really fun game we played today. We are suppose to be like two 3d television screen with a volume adjustment on it. Group A to depict a noisy party scene and Group B to depict a quiet and slow motioned party scene. Instruction was for Group A to slowly slows down and quieten down and for Group B to slowly increase the speed and volume!

  • You start to become more aware of your movement and gesture when you are in the process of changing to a scenario of a different mood.
  • Not only are we focusing on our actions and sound we make, we have to take note of our groupmates actions and the sound they make too so that the whole group can increase or decrease the speed and volume together.
After the practical works we were given 3 taxi stories to act on. Taxi stories as in storied being told by taxi driver or conversation held in a taxi between the driver and the passenger.

    The 3 taxi stories

We are being expose to this way of performing called the "Within, On the edge and Outside"
There will be three scenes going on in a same play. They can start at the same time or continue after the scene before that has ended.
This is the script that my group had presented:

Our within is the father, mother and the son. Our Edge is the nurses in the centre.

    Planning a Drama Lesson

We have to tell the class the purpose of the lesson. What is it for? Why do we need to learn it.

When we have games in the lesson, we have to tell the students the purpose of the games. After playing the game, a small discussion will be good. We may ask the students about their thoughts, and ask them what they had learnt from it. Even if the respond isn't what the teacher expect, teacher could reply by saying " We all respond differently. The reason I do this exercise is because______ however, you discovered a different thing!"

Whatever we did in lesson, a reflection in the end is quite important as it is the one that helps students link with the things they had just exposed to.

We started by playing this game called Dog Cat Mouse. This is a really really fun game BUT everyone was confused! It really take some time for us to figure it out physically and mentally. We are all supposed to pair up and two people starts the game. One to be the cat and one to be the mouse. Apparently the cat has to catch the mouse and where the mouse go?!

The mouse has to run to a pair and hold one of their hand and once they hold hand, the partner that is not being held becomes the dog! and the dog has to chase the cat off. and where the cat run?! the cat find another partner to hold hand with and the partner that is not being held became a bigger dog to chase that dog off.

    Tensions:
    • Tension in not knowing whether you are the person catching or you are the person running away!
    • Tension in anticipating who is the mouse running to and if he/she hold your hand your tension decresed but your partner get all excited as he/she has to think about the first tension mentioned above.

Follow by Dogs and bones. Everyone to Sit in a circle except one person in the middle. This person have to guide a chain of key right infront of him/her. he/ she has to close the eyes while people around slowly quietly move in whatever ways they could towards this person. (Crawling is the quietest i guess thus all of us look lik dogs!) Once this person point onto one direction, the person that is at that direction has to go back to the circle. Once somebody get hold of the key, everyone has to return to the circle and someone has to keep the key and the person in the middle can finally open the eyes to guess who has the key! That is the fun part, because everyone copies the action of the person who has the key! For example the person has two hands hiding at the back, most of us did the same thing too! Some of our expression is really decieving though and the expression of the person who has the key has to be really natural!

    Tensions:
    • Tension of the person in the middle right from the beginning as this person cannot open his/her eyes so all the senses except for the eyes have to be well alert and listen carefully to who is crawling towards him/her
    • Tension in the people crawling towards the person anticipating when will him/her notice about the movement made
    • Tension on the person who has the key, nervous whether his/her expression is natural enough to cover up his/her nervousness.
    • Tension on the rest of the people on when will the culprit be caught!
    Followed by Huters
    Floowed by Murderers.

Had our first lesson on Elements of Drama today! =D
It was wonderful! ^-^ We played lots of games and without noticing, we had actually learnt alot while playing!

    The games we played:

    Witch and Child

Everyone formed a circle except for two people in the middle of the circle and everyone has to learn this simple script that goes:

    W: Where are you going!
C: To Brickle to Brickle to get some woods
    W: What for?
    C: To heat the pot
    W: What for?
    C: To cook some Foul.
W: Where did you get it?
    C: From your yard!

And the person that is acting as the child have to run out of the circle as fast as he/she can to avoid the witch from catching and the "trees" have to quickly let the child out and stop the witch from catching the child.

    Skills:
    • A short script to warm up with before starting a rehearsal
    • Train focus as everyone have to work together to rescue the child!
    • Vocal warm up as everyone have to say the script together with the child.

    Lemonade

    What is your name?
    where are you from?
    Whart have you got?
    Give us some then!

Prue asked us to group into 3 groups and we are to discuss and come up with a game that we played before, back in those days (when we don't need to rush assignments during recess time and nothing to think about except for filling our stomach and have some fun!), and teach our the whole class. We discussed and each of us came up with a handful of games and finally decide on one that is easier to understand and teach, the Grandmother'f Footsteps.

Here goes the game that the first group teach:

    Five cent coin

We are suppose to get into a big circle, one person to sit in the middle and one 5 cent coin passing around the big circle and that person sitting in the middle is suppose to guess where is the coin! It didn't sound very difficult but let me assure you that it was! Not for us though, for Shehana, who volunteered to sit in the middle. =D She was quite regretted after that =D but we all had fun and learnt something.

    Skillls practiced:

    • It is a great game to practice our vocal in a fun way as we have to keep saying "five cent coin ah five cnet coin" in a specific rhythm and everyone say it together therefore Shehana is like "Oh my goodness this is kind of scary when you are in here, it is like some kind of chantings!" haha.
    • It is a nice game to practice coordination in a team we have to coordinate the rhythm that we "chant" with our hand movment which is something like "pretending" to take the five cend coin from the person at your right to your left hand, regardless if the coin is there or not!

    • Train your focus, as if you are at any of the time unfocused the five cent coin will be exposed! and the person in the middle can see it if it is left on your hand for too long.

    Grandmother's footsteps/ Grandma's footsteps

One person to be the old Gradmother who watches the television and the rest to be the naughty grand children who want to play a fool with the Grandmother! By slowly cripping towards the Grandmother and when the Grandmother turns and look back everyone is suppose to freeze and this was how we look like in the lesson just now!

    Skillls practiced:

    Pepsi Cola Game

One really exciting game! Each person can only take one step after the person before him/her done his/her step. The aim is to step on anyone's leg and be the winner of all. A video that shows the game:

    Skillls practiced:
    We get to learnt about
    Elements of Drama

    Role
    Dramatic Tension
    Focus
    Place/Space
    Time
    Movement
    Language
    Symbol
    Mood

There are three elements that helps in the motivation of the ROLE. They are the Status, the Purpose and the Attitude.

    Food of the Day:
Drama seems to be happening in our everyday's life, that inculde the time we are playing! Today I learnt that you can actually learn alot of things while having fun.
